In 2012, the city of Cincinnati required a low-maintenance, permanent and lightweight support system for the Walnut Street Fountain. The interactive fountain is one among the many outdoor attractions that constitute the Riverfront Park of Cincinnati.

The park spans 45 acres and is present next to the Great American Ball Park, which is the home of the Cincinnati Reds. Since the fountain is present in a highly congested area, the support system protecting the pumps, the hoses and the lighting cables while supporting the flag stones of the square, had to be transported installed and handled with the least effort and disruption to traffic. These factors along with the need to ensure exceptional corrosion resistant properties have made fiber reinforced concrete the clear choice.

Harrington Industrial Plastics and Monarch Construction selected a solution that incorporated DURAGRATE® I-K2" square mesh by I-K2" thick molded grating coupled with EXTREN® Series 525 wide flange beams as support. The high resin content (65%) of DURAGRATE® makes sure that this support system will provide years of extended maintenance-free performance.

The product used was a lightweight support system and it was made by the molded fiberglass, pultrusion and the fiberglass fabrication process. Materials used are the EXTREN® fiberglass structural shapes and the DURAGRATE® fiberglass molded grating. Sizes used were 6" x 3/8" EXTREN® 525 wide flange beam 1-1/2" square mesh DURAGRATE®. The product was manufactured for Harrington Industrial Plastics and Monarch Construction.
